Andresen takes ice bucket challenge, ALS fund set up following death of Bitcoin pioneer Finney

The Bitcoin community has poured out their appreciation for Bitcoin pioneer Harold Thomas (Hal) Finney, who died on Thursday from ALS. He was 58.

Finney was the first ever recipient of a Bitcoin transaction from Satoshi Nakamoto in January 2009 and the first to engage Nakamoto in his "P2P e-cash" concept in 2008. He is well known for his contributions to the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) project and the reusable proof of work system, important precursors to today's Bitcoin. He is also credited as lead developer in several well-known console video games.

Erik Vorhees of Coinopalt, Jason King of Sean's Outpost, Roger Ver, BitPay and Bitcoin Foundation have teamed up to establish a donation fund for ALS research.

Gavin Andresen, Bitcoin Foundation's chief scientist, has taken the ice bucket challenge as a tribute to Finney and has challenged fellow Bitcoin community leaders to do the same.

Finney is being cryopreserved at the Alcor Life Extension Foundation's facility in Arizona in the hopes that new technologies will one day revive him.
