Gerard Pique, a Spanish professional footballer, and defender of FC Barcelona announced today that he has joined Paris-based global fantasy football game, Sorare as a strategic advisor. Additionally, the footballer made an investment in the non-fungible token (NFT) platform through his Cassius family fund.

According to the official announcement, Pique joined Sorare in an effort to help the company onboard the top 20 football leagues around the world. Sorare plans to expand its global presence with the help of the recent investment by the Spanish footballer.

The Ethereum -based NFT site raised a total of nearly $8.5 million as a seed fund for its global expansion. The platform onboarded Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain in recent months.

“Together, we’ve pioneered a new industry: digital sports card collecting. We’re also revolutionizing the increasingly popular fantasy football industry. People from all around the world can now express their fandom for a club or a player, build meaningful identities and relationships with the cards, and seize new economic opportunities around it. Now it’s time to bring our concept to football clubs and fan communities on an international scale with Gerard Pique, with our partners but most importantly with you: our community of managers,” the company said in an official announcement.

Blockchain and Football

The use of blockchain technology in the sports industry has surged in recent months. Professional football clubs around the world announced the launch of Fan Tokens. FC Barcelona, the club for which Pique plays, also launched a fan token earlier this year in partnership with a blockchain platform, Chiliz. “I’ve been a big fan of soccer cards since I was a kid. As an entrepreneur, I think the world of soccer itself has to innovate,” Pique said in a virtual press conference.

"I think it’s a great project because it’s the next step. It’s the present and the future, and the next generations will collect these kinds of assets or digital cards,” he added.
