Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ) has seen its latest senior hire, this time elevating company veteran Rufus Pinto to the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in Laos. The promotion follows after a lengthy career with ANZ that has already seen Mr. Pinto undergo multiple senior roles with the group, also formerly working as the CEO of ANZ’s Kiribati operations.

Mr. Pinto’s promotion constitutes ANZ’s latest appointment in H2, following on the heels of its recent hire of an Australian-based CFO back in June. This year has been more about targeted hires in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) ) space, as opposed to a large number of incoming personnel across its business.

In his new role as ANZ’s CEO of Laos, Mr. Pinto will be reporting to Dennis Hussey, the group’s CEO Vietnam and Head of Greater Mekong Region. In this capacity he will be playing a key role developing ANZ’s local resources as well as trade flows within the local region.

He will step into his new role later this year on October 1, 2017, following the requisite regulatory approvals. In his stead, ANZ will be making a new appointment to fill his vacated role as Regional Country Head for ANZ in Vanuatu, Kiribati & New Caledonia. His promotion will pave the way for a successor, following a little over a year in the position.

Prior to his time as the Regional Country Head for ANZ in Vanuatu, Kiribati & New Caledonia, Mr. Pinto worked at the lender in a number of other senior roles dating back to 2011. This includes stints as its Board Director for ANZ Vanuatu and ANZ Kiribati, CEO of ANZ Kiribati, a Senior Private Wealth Banker, and Director of Consumer and Services.

Additionally, he has also worked at Westpac as an Associate Director, focusing on large corporates, as well as a Senior Executive at National Australia Bank (NAB), and Standard Chartered, among other stops dating back to 2000, according to information made public on his Linkedin profile.

Dennis Hussey commented on the appointment: “ANZ was the first locally incorporated international bank in Laos, where we play an important role supporting customers with trade flows across the rapidly-integrating ASEAN region and our home markets. We’re pleased to have someone with Rufus’ extensive experience in both Australia and international markets to lead ANZ Laos.”
