The research market in the US appears to be showing signs of strength with Crédit Agricole CIB making two new senior hires. The group has brought in two Alex Li as its Head of US Rates Strategy as well as Italo Lombardi as a Latin American (LATAM) economist and strategist.

The duality of hires reflects the latest string of appointments amongst US research and investment firms in New York, many of which having added personnel over the past 12 months. Across the Atlantic, the situation could not be more different as the upcoming regulatory changes via MiFID II in January portend a contraction in the research industry at big lenders, possibly upwards of 30 percent.

For Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank's (CIB) part, the hires will strengthen its team in New York, specifically its Global Markets Research division. Alex Li joins the group as its Head of US Rates Strategy, who will oversee the development of interest rate research products for Crédit Agricole’s US business. In this capacity he will be reporting to Mohit Kumar, Global Head of Rates Strategy and locally to Christine Cremel, Global Markets Regional COO for the Americas.

Mr. Li lands at Crédit Agricole after a career that has encompassed over two decades in the US, emphasizing interest rates and the fixed income space. He joins Crédit Agricole from Deutsche Bank Securities, having served as an integral component of its research team. This includes the development of client-facing interest rate research products in Treasuries, inflation-linked and interest rate futures, and other models

LATAM focus

By extension, Mr. Lombardi will bolster Crédit Agricole’s LATAM focus – he harbors a deep understanding of several key economies across LATAM, specializing in financial market analysis and other areas of note such as macroeconomics, foreign Exchange (FX), and interest rates.

Mr. Lombardi joins Crédit Agricole after five years at Standard Chartered. He is no stranger to the banking industry with stops at BNP Paribas as well, whilst based out of New York. In his new role as the group’s LATAM economist and strategist, he will be reporting globally to Sebastien Barbé, Head of Emerging Markets Research & Strategy, and locally to Ms. Cremel.

Gene K. Kim, Head of Global Markets for the Americas and International at Crédit Agricole CIB, commented: “We are pleased Alex and Italo are joining the Global Markets Research Division Americas. They bring a wealth of product knowledge and important relationships to Crédit Agricole CIB in the US, which will enable us to further expand our fixed income business.”
