ESMA announced that it has named Dr George Theocharides as its new Chairman of the Economic and Markets Analysis Committee.
Recently shared in a press release with Finance Magnates, Dr George Theocharides, who is the sitting chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), has been appointed by The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) as its new Chairman of the Economic and Markets Analysis Committee (CEMA).
A Prominent Regulatory Leader
Dr Theocharides has been associated with the Cypriot regulator for a couple of years. Before his appointment as the CySEC Chair in September 2021, he held the post of Vice-Chairman with the regulator from July 2020 and also served with it as a non-Executive Board member before that.
He has a strong financial background with a long academic career. Prior to his position with CySEC, he fulfilled the role of Associate Professor of Finance at the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM) and a Director of the MSc in its Financial Services Programme for just short of a decade.
Additionally, he took on the responsibilities required as an Assistant Professor of Finance at Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea. There, he lectured in finance between 2006 and 2010. Moreover, he became an International Faculty Fellow at the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the fall of 2006.
Moreover, his vast industry experience includes his tenure as a non-Executive member of the Bank of Cyprus Interim Board and Board Chairman of Cyprus Blockchain Technologies Ltd. Furthermore, he served in various non-Executive Board Member roles for CISCO Ltd, iSingthis eMoney Ltd, ED&F Man Capital Markets CEEMA Ltd, Global Balanced Fund of Funds Salamis VCIC Plc.
Also, he is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) and a Research Associate at the UCL Centre for Blockchain Technologies (UCL CBT).
