The European subsidiary of Gemini on Wednesday announced the appointment of Julian Sawyer as the managing director of the United Kingdom and Europe.
He is bringing over 20 years of experience in the crypto company and will be responsible for shaping Gemini's overall strategy in the region, developing market-leading products, and charting the course for operations.
Building team in Europe
This came as the New York-headquartered company started expansion initiatives across the ocean, and Sawyer will also be responsible for building his own team.
Prior to his new position at the crypto startup, he was the chief operating officer at Starling Bank, a leading mobile bank in the United Kingdom. He served the bank for almost five years and was responsible for building out business operations, including payment systems, card operations, and customer service.
He was also the director at Trade Horizons for over two years and was the chief executive at Piran Consulting, a Payments consulting firm.
Commenting on the new appointment, Tyler Winklevoss, chief executive at Gemini, said: “Europe is the birthplace of modern financial markets and the United Kingdom (UK) has been a global financial capital of innovation for hundreds of years. Gemini needs to be here, and Julian's deep knowledge and Fintech expertise in these regions make him well-suited to lead Gemini's expansion into this pioneering area of the world.”
Though centered in the United States, Gemini is expanding its services in all over the world. The company already offers crypto trading services in Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, and recently added Australia to its list.
In September, the company also dived into the crypto custodian business with the launch of a dedicated offshoot called Gemini Custody, which supports 18 digital currencies. In the same month, the company also tapped Noah Perlman as its chief compliance officer (CCO).
