Dutch banking giant, ING has appointed Ignacio Juliá Vilar as its newest Chief Innovation Officer, who finds himself in a new role after a lengthy career in the bank’s Polish Division, according to an ING statement.

Mr. Vilar steps into his new role as Chief Innovation Officer as well as ING’s Head of Retail Banking Segment. He will be succeeding Pole Brunon Bartkiewicz, who has helped steer the group’s innovation for the past two years, and will be shifting focus to a new position as the CEO of ING Bank Śląski.

Following the latest turnover at the CEO role, ING Bank Śląski’s acting CEO Małgorzata Kołakowska is also moving into a new position as the Global Head of Network.

Vilar has been a mainstay at ING for over a decade, originally joining the bank back in 2004. Since then he has held numerous roles, including Head of Strategy, Business Development and Planning, CFO and Executive VP Credit Risk and Business Intelligence, and most recently ING’s Head of Retail - VP of the Management Board.

Mr. Vilar will be stepping into the newly created role of Head of Retail Banking Segment, which ING noted had been created to bolster the overall ‘steering and coordination of retail banking at ING’. The bank opted to assimilate the responsibilities with the Chief Innovation Officer role in a bid to allow for greater executional certainty across new retail innovation products.
