BitMex announced that it has named Marc Robinson as its new Head of Custody, effective immediately.
According to an official press release identified by Finance Magnates, Marc Robinson, a senior executive with more than two decades of experience in fintech and cybersecurity companies, has been recruited by BitMex, a crypto derivatives Exchange , as its new Head of Custody.
Robinson brings extensive experience in finance to the post, in particular, his experience in traditional financial services firms in Japan. His career has progressed in leaps and bounds where he originally began in IT. From there, he moved on to ‘front office' electronic trading with Lehman Brothers as well as Nomura and JP Morgan. The appointment is a key element in delivering BitMex’s ‘beyond derivatives’ expansion strategy.
Reviewing Robinson’s Vocational Background
Earlier to Robinson’s new position, he concurrently fulfilled four roles until earlier this month. He served as a Board Member for both Japannext Co., Ltd. and Börse Stuttgart Digital Exchange GmbH. Additionally, he left SBI Digital Asset Holdings as COO where he drove Global Digital Asset Ecosystem Initiatives. Further, he moved on from SBI Security Solutions as COO & Head of Digital Assets. His role involved steering the Digital Asset Innovation in Japan and beyond, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Prior to these roles, he became COO at SBI VC Trade. Simultaneous to the position, he accomplished the role of Chief Business Manager at SBI BITS from early 2016; as well as serving SBI Japannext as Chief Relationship Officer where he drove innovation in the Digital Asset Ecosystem.
Before at ThreatSTOP, Inc., Robinson changed his direction from financial services to cybersecurity and served as Territory Manager-APAC & EMEA in Tokyo, Japan.
JPMorgan Chase made use of his skills as an Executive Director and Head of High-Frequency Trading Product for Asia.
Additionally, at Nomura, Robinson became the Vice President of High-Frequency Electronic Trading Product Manager for Asia. Over three and a half years, he conceptualized and helped bring about Market Ultra-Low Latency Execution platforms and market data.
In July 2002, he joined Lehman Brothers as its Head of Connectivity (WAN & Client Connectivity) for Asia Pac. For around six years, he built up and managed the Asia Pacific Client connectivity Infrastructure and other responsibilities.
Originally, he began his career at ING Barings as a Network Engineer in mid-1998.
A Time of Significant Expansion
Alex Höptner, Chief Executive Officer of 100x Group, commented: “Marc is another high calibre recruit, joining us at a time of significant expansion. His background in traditional financial services combined with his experience in digital assets – particularly his knowledge of custody – are the perfect blend to help us deliver one of the big planks of our growth strategy.”
“BitMEX is at a really exciting point in its journey and I’m thrilled to be joining such a talented team under the leadership of Alex Höptner. Custody is an integral part of the ‘beyond derivatives’ ecosystem. The digital asset landscape continues to gain momentum both for retail customers, as well as institutional clients, and so it’s important that we work towards providing them with a regulated, fully licensed, custody offering. We want to create a standalone custodian service, building on BitMEX’s well-deserved reputation for world-class security, that allows assets not only to be secure but also allows clients flexibility with their funds,” said Robinson.
