Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong announced today it has appointed Lay Choo Ong as its new head of retail banking, Hong Kong. Vicky Kong, head of the Hong Kong retail banking team, will become global head of wealth proposition. She will double-hat as regional head of wealth management for Greater China and North Asia (GCNA). Both appointments will take effect from 1 June 2020.
Choo Ong has held a number of senior positions in group wealth management and retail banking since joining Standard Chartered in 2011.
The bank said that Choo Ong would lead the retail banking team in Hong Kong to drive innovation and transform the client journey with a human touch. Lay Choo has been instrumental in leading the development of the client proposition and strategy for the affluent client segment while she was head of priority clients.
She was promoted to regional head of wealth management in 2017, in addition to her role as global head of wealth proposition. Choo Ong has applied her extensive experience in wealth management and retail banking to develop the digital wealth strategy and promote best practices across markets.

Vicky Kong joined Standard Chartered 12 years ago and has held senior management roles in the bank’s operations in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Under her leadership, retail banking Hong Kong has enhanced its digital capabilities and launched a variety of innovative banking services to the clients, which have strengthened the brand of retail banking in Hong Kong.
In her new role, she will lead the strategic direction of the GCNA wealth management business, with the GCNA wealth management teams reporting to her, according to the bank. She will also support group wealth management to formulate a global strategy, drive the design and positioning of the overall wealth management proposition to deepen client relationships.
