Payments giant, Visa (NYSE: V) has named Ryan McInerney as the new Chief Executive Officer, replacing Alfred Kelly, who will step down from the position, effective from 1 February 2023. Kelly, now also the company's Chairman, will become the Executive Chairman of Visa.

The appointment for the apex management role came with an internal promotion as McInerney will be elevated from his current position of President. He joined Visa in 2013 and is responsible for overseeing its financial institutions, acquirers, merchants and partners.

Before Visa, he worked with JPMorgan Chase for three years as the CEO of Consumer Banking and another eight years at McKinsey & Company as a Principal.

"I am looking forward to continuing to help Visa deliver innovative solutions that help individuals, businesses, and economies thrive," McInerney said.

The Old Boss

Kelly will be stepping down after leading the payments giant as its CEO since 2016. He was elected as the Chairman in 2019.

Under his leadership, Visa "achieved accelerated growth across revenue streams and continued to fortify its foundation as a company." He even led the company when the payment ecosystem changed significantly, and the company strengthened its technology and expanded geographically.

Kelly spent 23 years at American Express in his career of over three decades. Before Visa, he was the President and CEO of the technology and digital media company Intersection. He even served in the US White House under President Ronald Reagan as the Head of Information Systems.

"I cannot think of a finer leader to continue to position Visa at the center of money movement in increasingly innovative ways," Kelly said in a statement. "Ryan has boundless energy and passion for this business and in his role as President, and as my close partner for the past six years, he has become intimately familiar with how Visa operates and the exciting opportunities this industry presents."
