With the title of one of the most lucrative films of all time, The Avengers, and an array of other successful titles like Ironman, Spider-Man and Thor, one would strongly suggest that having licensed branded online casino games would be a great way to bring in more players.
Up until now, that was true for Playtech and Cryptologic, who for years have had an agreement with Marvel to brand their slots and games with famous comic-book characters from the Marvel universe. With games like Marvel Roulette and The Avengers slots, the big names draw in quite a bit of traffic and have proven to be very successful. That was until Disney came into the picture.
The Disney Corporation, mostly known for their family-friendly image, bought out Marvel back in 2009. Recently, we have seen Disney taking the opposing end when it comes to gambling, with not offering casino games or slots on their cruise ships, or in their resorts and never licensing any of their original characters and franchises for use in gaming, whether physical or online. As a result, it seems that Disney will not be renewing any licenses that Marvel has made with Playtech and Cryptologic.
Disney’s stance on gambling as a whole will also impact any future plans for other extremely successful franchises, like Star Wars to get their versions of online casino games and slots.
With the licensing for Playtech and Cryptologic ending within the next 2 years, we can expect to see other companies, like DC Comics (Warner Bros.) and the Star Trek franchise (Paramount Pictures), try and fill the void that will be left by Disney and Marvel.
