eBay along with payment subsidiary PayPal the new versions of its applications for Samsung’s new Gear 2 smartwatch.
With the fast rise of mobile Payments , MWC has become not only a coming out event for new smart-devices, but has become a podium for Ecommerce and Mcommerce companies to show off their latest innovations in mobile payments. PayPal Vice President of Global Product Hill Ferguson announced on the company’s blog that the PayPal mobile wallet will be the first payment solution to be made available on the new smartwatch. This is a big decision for eBay and PayPal, and shows their support of wearable tech.
When it comes to smartwatches, the market is rather fragmented as there is no standard operating system to run on them. For the most part, companies have decided to work with stock or forked versions of Android. Samsung’s previous smartwatch the Galaxy Gear worked of a heavily modified version of Android. The new Gear 2 works off Samsung’s own Tizen operating system, meaning eBay and PayPal have had to create a new application to support the new device.
"Think about someone who's riding a bike. It's not convenient for a rider to pull out a phone and order a new helmet. But if the device is already on his or her wrist and it's active, the rider is more likely to make the purchase," said Vice President, Innovation and New Ventures at eBay Inc. Steve Yankovich in a press release last December.
Wearable technology is suspected to be more accepted by mainstream consumers this year. We should expect to see more wearable Mcommerce innovations released as more devices hit the market.
