Spanish travel booking firm accepts Bitcoin for hotels, flights, and now train tickets

Spanish hotel and travel booking firm Destina.com has announced it has sold the first railway ticket using the digital-currency Bitcoin .

The booking firm started accepting Bitcoin this last January and is one of the leading pioneers in Bitcoin acceptance throughout Europe. Destina accepts Bitcoin for flight arrangements, hotel bookings, and now railway tickets.

The tickets sold were for the state owned Alta Velocidad Española (AVE) railway service. The tickets were for the Madrid-Barcelona round trip line. The tickets were reserved by tourist from Germany and Italy, along with Spanish locals. Accroding to Destina, Germany, Italy and Spain are the sources of the majority of its BTC based transactions.

Little by little we will expand the available product base in BTC,” confirms Amuda Goueli, Destinia’s CEO.

As Bitcoin does not come attached with additional transfer and cross-border fees, and charges are immediate, as opposed to several days until approval, Destina does not charge any additional costs to its BTC paying customers.

"We are convinced Bitcoin is the beginning of a change, as was the Internet that has revolutionized our lives. It is true that today it is a volatile market, niche-based and open to questioning, but it is also true this virtual currency is being judged with present-day eyes instead of withfuture vision. And in this future, Payments will be different. They will be called bitcoins or something else. However, this virtual currency will be a clear protagonist. We want to be prepared for this change when it takes place,” confirms the CEO of the online agency.
