Japanese foreign Exchange brokerage group Gaitame has released its comprehensive trading metrics for the month ending May 2017. As a basis of comparison, the latest volumes corresponded to a slight rebound off of its recent lows, though any sustained recovery was ultimately capped and influenced by muted movements across the Japanese yen.

Despite seeing some gains in key segments in May 2017, a narrow trading range for the yen and stagnated movement in Japanese currency ultimately constrained Gaitame’s monthly volumes, which was on par with other Japanese FX brokerages, many of which suffered from lower readings in May.

This was reflected in Gaitame’s volumes in May 2017, which continued to cede ground from earlier this year. The latest readings showed a figure of $1.85 billion (¥204.3 billion) for the month, higher by 8.9 percent month-over-month from $1.70 billion (¥187.5 billion) in April 2017. April had proved to be the slowest trading month for the group since October 2016, and its worst volumes performance in 2017.

Despite bouncing off last month’s figure, Gaitame’s volumes have failed to recapture the same levels seen earlier this year. An overall trend in H1 2017 has been one of lower volumes, with Gaitame seeing a year-to-date plunge of 36.4 percent. Moreover, May 2017 was also lower than its yearly counterpart, dwindling by 8.3 percent year-over-year from $2.03 billion (¥222.7 billion) in May 2016. Looking to next month, any uptick in the action of the JPY will ultimately Yield an improvement in volumes at the brokerage.

All-time high in accounts

One area of growth at Gaitame in May 2017 was across its client accounts, which inched upwards to an all-time high of 446,769 for the month. The brokerage had secured a monthly increase in accounts in every successive month in 2017, having now netted a growth of 2,133 accounts, or less than 1.0 percent higher month-over-month from 444,636 accounts in April 2017. Year-over-year, the latest record reading is also higher by a factor of 6.5 percent from 419,514 accounts in May 2016.

Looking at the group’s deposit totals in May, Gaitame also disclosed another yearly high in 2017, culminating in a reading of $1.022 billion (¥112.4 billion), virtually unchanged month-over-month from $1.04 billion (¥102.19 billion) worth of deposits in April 2017. The deposit total in May was the highest recorded at Gaitame since May 2016.
