The Polish regulator said that it is probing a suspected cyber attack targeting its internal website systems which was discovered earlier today. The country’s law enforcement authorities have already been informed.
KNF spokesman Jacek Barszczewski commented: "Internet website www.kng.gove.pl has been switched off by the administrators of KNF in order to secure evidence. KNF remains in contact with representatives of regulated sectors, including banking, whose activity is not threatened."
He was also quoted as saying: "Internal reporting systems function independently from the system operating the website and remain safe."
A little more than a year ago, a government department that deals with Cybersecurity confirmed that a few Polish commercial banks had been victims of a malware infection. At the time, the investigation suggested that the starting point for the infection could be the server of the Polish financial regulatory body. Overall, it is ironic that the website of the key institution responsible for assuring security in the financial sector was used to attack it.
