The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has suspended trading in 200 stocks after a technical issue earlier in the day prompted the firm to reroute some trading to alternative locations. Minutes after the company declared the issue resolved, the difficulties reappeared, causing the suspension of trading.
Competing U.S. exchanges BATS and Nasdaq have both declared self-help against the NYSE due to a series of technical errors that have prompted the close of all open orders in the stocks that were mentioned by the Exchange as problematic.
The activation of the self-help protocol can allow the the bypassing of NYSE’s automated trading center. Every exchange has an automated trading system (ATS) that manages the orders and automatically submits those to the exchange.
According to an official statement on the exchange’s Market Status website: “NYSE is experiencing a technical issue in one trading unit, which is affecting a subset of symbols listed on our Market Status website here. Trading is suspended in these symbols and all open orders in these symbols were cancelled.”
