Colt Improves Connectivity Deployment in London Through Standardised Wayleaves

Colt Technology Services, a provider of on-demand network and communications services, decided to take up the challenge of creating a new and improved way of handling London businesses’ connections to its high speed network, cutting down the deployment process from months to a few weeks.

Colt has participated in a project involving the City of London Corporation, local developers, telcos, landlords, legal firms and key trade associations to improve Connectivity for businesses and to speed up the installation of broadband. All parties will benefit from lower costs and more efficient ways of working through a standardised wayleave toolkit for London infrastructure build outs.

Wayleaves are complicated and costly legal agreements whereby a land or building owner essentially grants an access license to a communications operator for the deployment and management of new infrastructure.

Such agreements were tricky because each land or building owner requires a separate approach and then the wayleave still needs to get approval from tenants, all of which can take a lot of time and money.

Standardising the wayleave process

Colt set out to improve this by developing a standard approach which allows carriers to deliver digital infrastructure quicker and at lower cost to customers in London.

It is hoped that the use of this standard document will speed up the process of agreeing and granting wayleave agreements allowing a faster and more co-ordinated approach to the installation of services in commercial buildings.

The launch of this new service in London is in sync with the company’s global strategy to take the lead in business-tailored connectivity for the world’s key cities.

Mark Boleat, Policy Chairman at the City of London Corporation, commented: “Broadband is the lifeblood for successful firms so it is essential they have access to high-speed internet when they move in. Any efforts which reduce the time and cost in getting superfast broadband in the capital are a welcome step. It has been great to see so many interested parties pulling in the same direction to get this legal template agreed.”
