XTX Markets is introducing the AI-MO Prize, a $10 million challenge fund designed to encourage the development of a publicly-shared AI model capable of achieving a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

AI-MO Prize's Quest for Advanced Mathematical Reasoning

A $5 million grand prize awaits the initial publicly-shared AI model participating in an AI-MO approved competition, demonstrating a performance equivalent to achieving a gold medal in the IMO.

Additionally, progress prizes totaling up to $5 million will be granted for publicly-shared AI models reaching key milestones. The AI-MO Prize aims to advance beyond existing large language models and foster the creation of new AI models capable of mathematical reasoning, potentially representing a new Turing Test.

Gregor Dolinar, the President of International Mathematical Olympiad, commented: "Using hard mathematical problems as a benchmark to determine if AI can match the highest cognitive functions of human beings is a wonderful idea. Every year, more than 600 of the best students from more than 110 countries are challenged with six extremely difficult IMO problems, typically only one or two students solve all six IMO problems in the allotted nine hours.”

“I am sure that many people will be following the AI-MO Prize with great excitement, to see when, in the future, AI will match the world's brightest young minds."

Terence Tao, a Fields Medallist from UCLA, conveyed that despite recent advances, the utilization of AI for solving or assisting with advanced mathematical problems remains a highly complex and multifaceted challenge.

He emphasized the importance of experimenting with multiple approaches to this goal and benchmarking the performance of each. According to him, the AI-MO Prize holds promise in providing a set of benchmarks that will aid in comparing different AI problem-solving strategies at a technical level, presented in a manner that is accessible and appealing to the broader public.

Competition Dynamics: AI-MO Advisory Committee and Olympiad Problem-Setters

The competition, set to open in early 2024, will be overseen by an AI-MO Advisory Committee, featuring mathematicians, AI experts, and experienced Olympiad problem-setters. Full details on competition rules and entry criteria will be released in due course.

Simon Coyle, the Head of Philanthropy at XTX Markets, commented: "XTX Markets is launching the AI-MO Prize to spur the development of AI models capable of mathematical reasoning. We look forward to working with mathematicians, scientists and technologists to develop the prizes, and to seeing how AI models compare against exceptional high-school mathematicians."
