XTX Markets, a global algorithmic trading firm, has continued its charitable support for mathematics education. The electronic market marker is the principal sponsor of the University of Oxford’s Maryman Mirzakhani Scholarship and the Ukraine International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team for 2023 and 2024.
While XTX is supporting the scholarship with 'a £2.48 million gift’, the firm did not disclose the monetary value of its sponsorship of Ukraine’s IMO team. The scholarship is named after Maryam Mirzahani, a late Iranian mathematician and Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University. On the other hand, IMO is one of the most prestigious mathematical competitions in the world for pre-university students.
“The Maryam Mirzakhani Scholarship aims to address the disproportionately low levels of representation of women applying for and completing postgraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines,” said the University of Oxford’s Mathematical Institute in a statement.
XTX Markets Funds Doctorate Studies
On Friday, XTX Markets, which recently promoted Dr Hans Buehler as the Co-CEO, announced that Marta Bucca, the first recipient of the Maryam Mirzahani Scholarship, will join Oxford Mathematics in October as a postgraduate student.
Mirzahani before her death in 2017 was honoured with the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics for mathematicians under the age of 40. She is the first Iranian and first of only two women to date to receive the award.
“The gift from XTX Markets has led to further donations and together they have endowed fully funded scholarships for female students of any nationality to complete a standard four-year DPhil in Mathematics at Oxford’s Mathematical Institute,” the Institute further said.
XTX Supports Ukraine’s IMO Team
On the other hand, XTX in a recent statement noted that it is supporting Ukraine’s IMO team to meet specific areas of needs.
“XTX will support the Ukraine IMO team by funding coaching, training camps and competitions for the next two years, as well as providing scholarships for 6 students to complete their A-levels in the UK,” XTX explained.
Meanwhile, in June last year, XTX launched the Academic Sanctuaries Fund, a £15 million fund to support students and researchers forced to flee their homes due to the war in Ukraine. Over the past year, the electronic market released £10.1 million in funding for various academic sanctuary projects.
The firm is also supporting the Oxford University Graduate Scholarships for Ukraine with a grant of £602,550 from the fund.
